Welcome to E-xcellence

E-xcellence is a web-based instrument focusing on e-learning in higher education. It is the main product of a two-year project, undertaken under the auspices of EADTU and involving a
pool of experts from 12 European institutions with a stake in e-learning developments.

Quality Assurance in HE has received much attention at the institutional, national and European level through validation centres, universities (and their umbrella organisations), quality agencies, national ministries of education and the like.  These have established systems to cover the full organisational and content-related quality assurance of HE institutions and their programmes. However, few of these systems have so far developed a focus on the parameters of quality assurance governing e- learning.  This has therefore been the objective of the E-xcellence project.

It is not the intention of E-xcellence to interfere in any way with existing systems of quality assurance, but supplement them on e-learning specific issues. It is assumed that institutions and regulatory bodies will have a defined set of processes which provide for the development, monitoring, evaluation and enhancement of HE provision.  E-xcellence offers a supplementary instrument which may be used with these QA processes to allow the consideration of e-learning developments as a specific feature.  An important aspect of E-xcellence is that it offers a European-wide set of benchmarks, independent of particular institutional or national systems, and with guidance to educational improvement.

A Task Force Quality Assurance is established to update the instrument regularly and publish yearly a new version. The Task Force consists of expert representatives from open universities, traditional universities and accreditation bodies in higher education

E-xcellence Associates Label web site!

The E-xcellence Associates are focusing on the improvement of four priority elements of progressive higher education: Accessibility, Flexibility, Interactiveness and Personalization. By achieving the E-xcellence label universities demonstrate that they offer quality controlled e-learning and keep up to date with the latest developments. The web site will be launched on 1 January 2010. For more information, please contact the project coordinator.

Full assessment

The full assessment will enable you to determine the performance of your e-learning programmes and to pinpoint the requirements for further enhancement. It is a self-assessment approach with an on-site visit by an e-learning expert.

The objective of the instrument is to give institutions a tool for assessing their course(s) and programmes concerning specifically e-learning aspects. With the instrument, institutions can map their e-learning efforts on the different sections and document and present what evidence is available.

The instrument forms the input for the self-evaluation report which institutions write for the visiting expert. The expert will at the end of the full-assessment deliver a report on overall performance and recommendations for improvement.
