New Rector at Anadolu University


Born in Eskişehir in 1968, Prof. Naci GÜNDOĞAN began his undergraduate education at Ankara University of Political Sciences in 1986, graduating in 1990. The same year he started working at Anadolu University as a research assistant at the School of Economics and Administrative Sciences. He earned his Master’s degree in 1993 and his Ph.D. in 1996. In 2003 he became an Associate Professor of Social Politics, and became Professor in 2008 in the same school.

Prof. GÜNDOĞAN has published and presented papers in the field of social policy and labour economics. He is the author of “Youth Unemployment”, “The Changing Face of Poverty: The Working Poor”, and “Labour Economics”.

Prof. Fred Mulder receives OpenCourseWare Consortium’s Leadership ACE

Prof. Fred Mulder, UNESCO/ICDE Chair in OER at the Open Universiteit in the Netherlands and former Rector of OUNL is one of the two recipients of the OpenCourseWare Consortium's Leadership ACE for his work in promoting Open Educational Resources as an important instrument for Lifelong Open and Flexible (LOF) learning and for his leadership in establishing OER global networks.

The Governor-General has named Sir John Daniel as an Officer of the Order of Canada in the New Year's List.
The Officer of the Order of Canada recognizes a lifetime of achievement and merit of high degree, especially in service to Canada or to humanity at large for his advancement of open learning and distance education in Canada and around the world.

EUA ‘TRENDS 2015’ project to map key HE developments in Europe

The European University Association is launching the 7th in the series of its flagship TRENDS projects, which undertake a detailed analysis and mapping of developments in Europe's changing higher education landscape.

EUA has been conducting the TRENDS projects, and the resulting reports published since 1999, with a view to feeding an institutional perspective into European higher education policy discussions, and improving exchange and networking among and support for European universities. Over time, EUA's TRENDS reports have become crucial sources of information and reference works for policy makers and the higher education community alike.

UNINETTUNO and ASD signed the MoU for ASD-STE100 certified training

The ASD Simplified Technical English Maintenance Group (STEMG) is very pleased to announce that on Tuesday, November 26, 2013, at ASD Headquarters in Rue Montoyer 10, Brussels, ASD (represented by the Director of ASD-STAN, Günter Lessmann) and the International Telematic University UNINETTUNO (represented by the President and Rector, Prof. Maria Amata Garito) signed the Memorandum of Understanding by means of which UNINETTUNO becomes the only board accredited by ASD for the organization, delivery and issuing of the specific ASD-STE100 (STE) certification for training.

European Parliament votes on ERASMUS+ on Tuesday 19 November 2013

Erasmus+ will be discussed and voted on by the Committee on Culture and Education of the European Parliament on 19 November during the plenary session in Strasbourg. Foreseen starting date of the Erasmus+ programme is the 1st of January 2014.

Chris van Seventer knighted in the Order of Oranje-Nassau

Chris van Seventer was knighted in the Order of Oranje-Nassau on November 3, 2013. He primarily gets the award for his achievements in education. Van Seventer was vice-president of the Executive Board of the Open Universiteit in the Netherlands from 1985 to 1995. As chairman of the EADTU (European Association of Distance Teaching Universities), he devoted himself to international university cooperation.

30th anniversary of open and distance education conference at Anadolu University

The 30 years in ODL Conference with the motto "From Local to Global" shall be hosted at our Yunusemre Campus, Congress Center on November 7-8, 2013 in Eskişehir. Anja Oskamp appointed as the new President

In the General Board meeting of 23 October 2013 in Paris, Prof. Anja Oskamp of the Open Universiteit (The Netherlands) was appointed as the President of the EADTU for a two year period. In January 2014 she will take over this task from Will Swann of The Open University (UK).

Anja Oskamp is the rector magnificus of the Open Universiteit and has been a member of the Executive Committee of the EADTU in the last two years. She was appointed as rector of the Open Universiteit in February 2011. She has a background in Legal Knowledge Management and IT and was Dean of the Faculty of Law of the VU University Amsterdam since 2005.

Commission launches 'Opening up Education' to boost innovation and digital skills in schools and universities

More than 60% of nine year olds in the EU are in schools which are still not digitally equipped. The European Commission today unveils 'Opening up Education', an action plan to tackle this and other digital problems which are hampering schools and universities from delivering high quality education and the digital skills which 90% of jobs will require by 2020. To help kick-off the initiative, the Commission today launches a new website, Open Education Europa, which will allow students, practitioners and educational institutions to share free-to-use open educational resources. >>>Read more

This Summit was directly linked to the launch of the new 'Opening up Education' EC initiative which aims to fully exploit the potential of open and online learning for future proof education, skills and jobs.

Div.Ed has recently launched its project website

DivEdThe DIV.ED project is run by our member JKU. The project focuses on the complex topics "Diversity" and "acceptance"/"tolerance"  applied to the academic learning context. Its main output is a university Module to be tested, implemented, evaluated and exploited in four partner countries (Austria, Germany, Lithuania and Portugal) before being disseminated and exploited Europe-wide also with other target groups in different educational environments - including (ICT-supported) informal learning. For this purpose, DIV.ED relies on the support of strong networks of the 7 partner institutions and on the use of varied dissemination and exploitation channels, national broadcasting companies among others. >>>

UNED elects new Rector

 Alejandro Tiana Ferrer

The National University of Distance Education in Spain (UNED)  welcomes a new Rector: Prof. Dr. D. Alejandro Tiana Ferrer.
Mr. Ferrer has been elected with a majority of the votes and will be taking over from Juan Antonio Gimeno Ullastres.
The official inauguration date is 8 July 2013.

The new programme for education, training, youth and sport is called Erasmus+

ErasmusPlusOver 4 million people to benefit from EU grants for education and training over next seven years.
The Irish Presidency has brokered agreement on a new programme of apprxomiately €16 billion to support initiatives in education, training, youth and sport over the next seven years.
The programme, called Erasmus +, brings together all the current EU and international schemes for education, training and youth. For the first time, sports initiatives are included.
Irish officials have worked extensively on securing agreement on this initiative among Member States and with the European Parliament.

Launch of the first pan-European MOOCs initiative: OpenupEd

OpenupEd is the first MOOCs initiative which goes Europe-wide, with the support of the European Commission. By now 61 courses, covering a wide variety of subjects, are available, in 12 different languages. OpenupEd has been initiated and is coordinated by the European Association of Distance Teaching Universities (EADTU) and mostly involves open universities. The 11 launch partners are based in France, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, and the UK, and outside the EU in Russia, Turkey and Israel.

Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) appoints new rector

Josep A. Planell has been appointed Rector of the UOC for a seven year mandate. He succeeded Imma Tubella who has held this position since 2005. He graduated in Physics from the University of Barcelona in 1975 and completed his PhD at Queen Mary College, University of London, in 1983. Internationalization will be one of the cornerstones of his term in office, thus he intends to intensify collaboration with other universities, research centers and institutions. >>>

Launch of the NetCu Guidelines for networked Curricual

The NetCu project team launched the guidelines for organising networked curricula at the EADTU Conference in Paphos, 27-28 September. The aim of this publication is to offer a concise, “hands-on” handbook for all professionals who want to engage in setting up a networked curriculum for education. The research that was carried out indicates that there are numerous reasons and opportunities to start such collaboration. Read more in this policy paper.

International Forum “The World on the Path to a Smart Society”, 9-10 October 2012 in Moscow



Moscow State University of Economics, Statistics and Informatics (MESI) together with its partners holds the International Education Forum “The World on the Path to a Smart Society” on 9-10 October 2012 in Crocus Expo International Exhibition Center, Moscow, Russia.

The event will include the International Education Conference Smart e-Learning Russia (4th edition), the Summit Common Education Space in the Eurasian Economic Community, the Conference Innovation School, the Conference Innovative Technologies in Education and Teaching as well as the EduTech Russia Exposition.

E-xcellence in practice: MESI review

As part of the E-xcellence assessments on QA in e-learing, EADTU organised with MESI (Moscow) an on-line session on the 21st of June. In this session not only the Moscow site of MESI was involved but the team of E-xcellence reviewers from the Netherlands and Belgium was virtually visiting in total  4 MESI branches in Yerevan, Yaroslavl, Tver and Minsk. More than 50 people were involved in this session from various university departments and positions as well as 7 students. This 6 hour session was 1 step in the assessment procedure that will lead to inclusion of the E-xcellence benchmarks on e-learning in the various departments and a roadmap for further improving the e-learning performance of all units.  All particpants agreed that it was a highly effective and fruitfull session and important element of working with the E-xcellence instrument. Stakeholders' meeting E-xcellence in Brussels


EADTU is holding a stakeholders’ meeting at the UM Campus Brussels on the 12th of June on their E-xcellence benchmarking instrument for Quality Assurance in e-learning.  The meeting will be attended by the core group of the E-xcellence NEXT project and stakeholders like the EU, EUA, INQAAHE, ICDE, ESMU and EADTU student council. EADTU’s General Board meets with Xavier Prats-Monné



This year’s EADTU General Board meeting had a special section on the role of open education in European higher education systems. As this is in the direct interest of the EU, Deputy-Director General Xavier Prats-Monné was taking part the full day. In this meeting the strategic perspectives on the place of lifelong learning and distance education in European higher education systems were presented and discussed in the light of European Commission policies. Special attention was given to the role of open educational resources and open media with contributions from leading experts of the Open University. At this occasion, a new Task Force Strategies & Policies was established under Chairmanship of Rektor Hoyer of the FernUniversität in Hagen on new developments in HE and changing positions of universities. The focus of this Task Force is on institutional practices and policies and the positioning of distance learning in the European Higher Education Area.
This was the start of a year in which EADTU will strongly look into universities’ repositioning in the national and European context and the role they can play as “agents of change”.
